This Wednesday, November 18 is the first "Shanghai Photographer Night" down at Dada bar. Hosted monthly by photog Tim Franco (for Tim's latest stuff, have a look right here), the evening will see a revolving group of local photographers showing off their work on the big screen at Dada. Here’s the first group. There's no overarching theme -- just four photographers with different aesthetics, displaying some recent work.
Charlie Xia - "Urban Geometry"
Shanghai's most famous events photographer, Charlie Xia, is presenting a group of works called "Urban Geometry" (above). Showcasing his architectural photography, in this series Xia adopts Shanghai's elevated expressways as his subject material and experiments with light, lines, and geometric curves.
Patrick Wack - "I Build Shanghai"
Also exhibiting on the night is Shanghai-based French photographer Patrick Wack. Patrick Wack’s background is in portraiture and fashion photography, and his work has appeared in local and international publications. In this "I Build Shanghai" series Patrick adopts as his subject matter the construction site of the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and documents the people behind the scenes.
Francois Trezin - "Grandma's Drawer"
Francois Trezin is another Shanghai-based fashion photographer, but for this project, "Grandma's Drawer", he's exhibiting a conceptual series, based on the random content found in his grandparents' drawers. Fracois reconstructs the items, with the emphasis on constructing a narrative with the sculptures build from finite objects.
Tangting - "Music Scene"
The fourth guest for the first Shanghai Photographers Night is local photog, Tangting, whose work usually revolves around documenting local street/urban/youth culture. Tangting's pictures appear regularily in culture and trade magazines, and for his series "Delicate", he's put together a group of subtle and provocative images culled from his scenes of Shanghai's fashionable and impressionable younger class.
Just the details: Shanghai Photographer Night is this Wednesday, November 18. Doors are at 8pm, with music to the minimum and the slide shows going on until midnight. Special prices on select cocktails, wine, and beer. No cover at the door.
