GIGA (Green Ideas Green Action) is a local, non-profit organization aimed at giving designers and architects the tools to make their projects as eco-friendly as possible. The GIGA website is a platform that connects designers and architects to a growing database of local materials. These materials are in turn rated by the webmasters and by users, based on their sustainability. SmartShanghai first talked to the two designers behind GIGA -- Belgian graphic designer Mario Van der Meulen and Canadian architect Raefer Wallis -- when they were working on the beta version of the site last year. Click here for that interview.
This Thursday, August 20 GIGA is celebrating their official launch. Creative Hunt caught up with Sacha Silva to find out more about GIGA and their official launch.
What are the prospects for a green China? They're huge. There's a lot of momentum. There’s a lot going on at the governmental level that people don’t realize. These are issues to the government, and it’s in a unique position to mobilize a green initiative.
Any noteworthy projects?
URBN is definitely the banner for green-build in China. As China's first Carbon Neutral hotel, it has set a bar for green design. But there will be many other projects, and not just from A00.
Obstacles?
So far, the biggest difficulty is getting manufacturers on board. But once the demand from the design community grows, the manufacturers will have to respond.
Hopes for GIGA?
We hope it becomes a platform to connect designers to hundreds of thousands of rated materials. With a more profound awareness of the materials going into projects, building a green environment will hopefully become second nature.
And you’re official launching this Thursday?
Right, well this Thursday we will be officially relaunching the GIGA website. So starting at 6:30 there will be an industry networking session, and at 7:30 we will be introducing the website.
