Zendai(s) Almost Done

The ritzy-glitzy new home of Zendai MoMa is almost complete, and expectations are already towering as well. According to Architectural Record, the museum is "intended to rival such institutions as the Guggenheim"…with two hotels, loads of shops, and a theater surrounding it. Stand-alone museums just don't cut it, in China. The highlight of the space: winding, amorphous columns that look sort of like tree trunks, arching over 100 feet high.
The illustrious team behind the "Himalayas Art Museum" cum hotels cum shopping, are: Arata Isozaki, designer of the Barcelona Olympic Stadium, and KCA International, who did the interiors of the Burj al Arab (but not that shoddy elevator). The building has been under construction since 2006, and is finally expected to open in June, 2010. SIFF won't move in until 2011.
