Your Guide to Creative China

Tree of Type

January 20, 2012, by CH Staff

Nothing to do with China, but this 'Tree of Type' unearthed by Steven Heller for Imprint Magazine is too beautiful to not share. The font-astic piece was created back in 1937 by now defunct German type foundry Bauer to commemorate their 100th anniversary.

It's accompanied by text explaining the provenance and lineage of each font that, despite its grand old age of some 75 years, is as clear, precise and utterly fascinating as anything out there today.

As Heller comments, "The beautifully illustrated and precisely lettered arbor may not be entirely accurate, history-wise, but it is a delightful way of learning about the lineage of type", and we couldn't agree more.

We'd love to see a modern day version of this with all the many and varied typefaces created since the 1930s – now that would be something. Take a closer look at the beautifully intricate 'Tree of Type' at Imprint here.
