Architecural update
February 9, 2012, by CH StaffCouple of interesting builds have popped up on the CH radar, both via Dezeen.com. First up is a church on Luofu Mountain in Huizhou by O Studio Architects, or Church of Seed. No, it's nothing to do with Heatherwick's Seed Cathedral of the 2010 Shanghai Expo; instead it's formed of three curved walls that curl around the interior, it's apparently reminiscent of a seed.
Made from stark concrete with long vertical ridges on inside surfaces from the original bamboo formwork, our favorite part is the roof top viewing platform overlooking the surrounding forests. It's pretty austere, but that makes for some pretty incredible interiors, the only adornment to speak of being a giant cut out cross flooding the space with some welcome sunlight.
This next one isn't a church but to our eyes at least could be – instead it's a very pointy pavilion in Tianjin by Singapore studio Ministry of Design. That vivid orange cladding is corten – a steel alloy that forms a completely stable rust-like finish after several years. Underneath that, glazed windows and doors open up onto a showroom and offices for property development firm Vanke.
It's pretty cool and depending on the angle looks kind of reminiscent of a ship, or else Nike's iconic tick. More on that here.
