Urban Art Projects is a specialist design consultancy creating site‑specific art and design commissions for architectural and landscape environments since 1993. UAP offers a unique full-service approach to commissioning large-scale artwork and creative design solutions including; art strategy, artist selection, procurement and concept design, design development, engineering, documentation and fabrication. This proven integrated methodology provides low-risk solutions in the delivery of small and large scale artworks and design solutions to its clients. The UAP head studio and foundry is in Brisbane, Australia, with the sister studio located in Shanghai, China.

Urban Art Projects is seeking a Design Lead to join its team in Shanghai.

Responsibilities

    Business Development Support
    • Attend briefings with Business Development (BD) team to assess project opportunities and identify projects that require design or curatorial involvement
    • Undertake research, benchmarking, vision workshops, etc.
    • Collaborate with BD to develop conceptual direction of sales responses
    • Assist in the development of targeted/tailored sales responses
    • Assist in the development, review and update of relevant support documents
    Project Planning
    • Collaborate internally to develop project programs
    • Develop initial project delivery methodology and program
    Artwork Strategies
    • Undertake research and benchmarking
    • Develop conceptual direction and curatorial framework
    • Produce Strategy and Artist Selection Documents
    Curatorial
    • Invite and collaborate with guest curators as required
    • Lead curatorial direction on selected projects
    • Research, develop and maintain artist/designer relationships
    Artist/Designer Liaison
    • Source and procure appropriate artists/designers
    • Develop Artist/Designer Briefs and assist briefing sessions
    • Assist in the management of artist contractual relationships on behalf of the client/UAP throughout entire artwork commissioning process
    • Collaborate with artists through commissioning process
    Lead Design
    • Manage multiple in-house design and artist driven projects with multiple clients
    • Ability to collaborate with Australian ‘Sister’ Studio & Workshop
    • Review client brief; decide project design direction
    • Provide other team members with clear project brief
    • Lead project team in a collaborative manner identifying ideas and solutions
    • Produce imaginative design ideas for further development by project team
    • Set and review specific project milestones for design deliverables
    • Drive in-house design solutions as well as artist concepts through schematic design and developed design process
    • Collaborate with consultants, architects, engineers, etc. in order to develop design and artworks
    • Review and or create design presentation and provide input
    • Attend design presentation and present if required
    • Occasional travel within china to client briefings, presentations etc.
    • Manage and review prototypes where necessary on particular projects
    • Review and Assist UAP project managers throughout the fabrication and installation process to ensure quality is meeting the necessary required integrity of creative outcomes

    Requirements

    • An ability to think fast and creatively, to formulate new ideas and respond to client direction appropriately
    • Be able to visually convey through sketches or other mediums concepts and creative approaches
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent time management and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
    • A keen attention to detail and experience in the development of visual layouts/documentation
    • An ability to be flexible and a proactive team player in a fast changing environment
    • Strong ability to liaise with and communicate with designers, curators, artists, project managers, clients and other key stakeholders
    • A strong desire to work with a passionate and dedicated team willing to do whatever it takes to deliver projects on time
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    • As a minimum proficiency in Adobe creative suite
    • Experience working in a creative environment
    • Experience dealing with Artists, Designers and Built Environment professionals
    • Experience in the public realm is desirable but not essential
    • As a minimum a degree or higher qualifications in Architecture, Design or a Visual/Fine Arts, related discipline
    • Fluent in English. Mandarin not essential but looked upon favorably
